Tin roofing, also known as metal roofing, is considered more durable than composition or wood shingles. The roofing is manufactured in panels that install using aluminum nails or screws that fasten the panels to wood stripping, also known as nailers or battens.
Note that you can have a metal roof without battens; it all depends on the manufacturer's recommended installation. As a do-it-yourself homeowner, you can save on the cost of installing a tin roof by installing the stripping on an existing shingle roof or after the roofer installs the moisture barrier on roof sheathing.
Similar to most roofing projects, the job starts with taking some measurements and ordering the necessary materials and fasteners.
Always keep your safety in mind before doing roof work. Do not work on a roof in windy weather or you risk injury. Exercise extreme caution when working near overhead power lines at a roof. Use a tool belt that has a hammer loop to hold nails, a measuring tape, chalk line and a hammer when installing the wood stripping to keep everything handy. Experienced do-it-yourselfers can use a nail gun with 8d nail clips instead of a hammer and nails.
When installing a metal roof over an existing roof, insulate the spaces between the wood strips with rigid insulation to prevent condensation before installing the roofing. You also need to add furring strips.
Correctly measure the spacing of furring strips for a metal roof to further decrease condensation. Twenty-four inches is a common spacing of furring strips for a metal roof.
Access the roof using an extension ladder. Measure each section of the roof from side to side, parallel to the line of the fascia board. For this example, a section of roof is 20 feet wide. Measure the section of the roof from the fascia to the peak, and divide this by two, which is the two-foot spacing of the wood nailers.
In this example, the section of roof is 20 feet wide and 14 feet from the fascia to the peak. This translates to seven rows of strips, 20 feet long, spaced two feet apart, or lineal feet of stripping. This is your metal roof batten layout. Note the lineal footage of strips for each section of the roof and proceed with calculating nailers for the roof valleys and roof penetrations.Unity movement 3d
Measure each roof valley from the lower end to the upper end and multiply the result by two, which provides nailers for each side the valley. Count the number of penetrations, such as duct vents and pipe risers that go through the roof. Include 4 feet of stripping for each, which translates to inch-long nailers at all sides of a penetration. Obtain one-by-three framing lumber for the nailers based on your measurements and calculations.
Include 1 pound of 8d framing nails for every square feet of the roof. Start at the roof valleys. Snap chalk lines along each side of a valley, parallel to the valley and one inch from the valley at each side. Use the lines as guides for the inner edges of the wood nailers that are closest to the valley and install the nailers with 8d nails at inch intervals from the lower ends of each to the upper ends.
Cut off any portions of a nailer that extend beyond one end of the valley with a handsaw. Cut and install four pieces of wood stripping as nailers at each vent or pipe roof penetration. Cut the nailers to length as necessary, so that the inner edges are four inches from the vent or pipe.
What Is a Furring Strip, What Is It Used For, and How to Install It?
Install the nailers with a nail near each end of a piece. Snap chalk lines on the roof that coincide with the line of each rafter from the lower edge of the roof to the peak. The lines provide references when nailing the stripping. Determine the location of a rafter by a vertical set of nails in the fascia board or by an exposed rafter tail.
Measure from one edge of the roof to each location and transfer the measurements across the roof at the peak.Adding a wall finish to a concrete wall can be more that applying paint. Most basements that are below grade have masonry walls of solid concrete, cinder block or brick, and, thus, require a fastener designed specifically for attaching to these materials. In my work shop, in order to maximize space and efficiency, I need to mount items to the wall. The AC plywood has a nice finish to it and accepts stain well. In order to fasten anything to a masonry wall you need to use a concrete anchor. Most carpenters I know will fasten furring strips to the wall first then apply a wall finish over the strips.
Furring strips are strips of metal or wood that create a support system for a finished wall material to be fastened to. I typically make my furring strips out of plywood because it holds up better to the concrete fasteners. Thin solid wood furring strips tend to break apart at the fastener locations. In most applications, vertical anchoring is easier ad can often add strength if they are allowed to rest on the ground. The furring strip is placed vertically against an existing wall surface to which the new, finishing material will be attached. This area is near a bulkhead door and has seen water intrusion in the past.

If the furring strips are not long enough to reach the entire distance, place a second one lined up exactly with the first. Measure and cut strips so that each one ends at the center of a joist. This allows room for the next furring strip to be secured to the same joist. Install the next furring strip parallel to the first. Measure the required distance from the center of the first strip to the center of the next. Check this measurement at various points along the length of the furring strips to ensure that they are parallel.
Install additional furring strips as needed. Position the last furring strip flush with the wall, regardless of how close it is to the previous strip. Check that the furring strips are level. If adjustments are needed, loosen the furring strips and insert shims as needed to bring all furring strips to the same level. Tighten all screws when finished. Each stud is naturally flush with the surrounding woodwork. Drywall simply lifts into place, is screwed to secure and is taped and finished with mud to hide seams and anchors. Sometimes it's not quite so easy, though. If you have a brick or concrete wall, for instance, installing drywall against the bare masonry is setting yourself up for failure: Moisture will inevitably leach through the wall and make the drywall soggy or even mold.
Irregular surfaces are another tricky spot. Any fluctuation in the wall surface transfers to the drywall. In situations such as these, furring strips form a stud-like framework to which drywall easily installs. Furring strips keep moisture from the drywall and provide a flush final surface. Stretch a tape measure across the bottom of the wall and mark every 16 inches. Increase or decrease the spacing to either 12 or 24 inches if preferred. Repeat at the top of the wall.

This spacing matches the typical spacing of studs in a wall and allows drywall sheets -- which measure 4 by 8 feet in length or, occasionally, longer in 2-foot increments -- to always end on a stud. Draw vertical lines, from the top mark to the bottom mark on the wall, to outline the furring strip placement.
You may snap a chalk line for quick work or use a straightedge instead. Make additional measurement marks in the middle of the wall's height to make marking easier, as necessary.
Barriers on interior walls are irrelevant, and covering a wood-framed exterior wall with a barrier potentially creates an undesirable situation where the existing wall surface becomes sandwiched between an interior barrier, installed over the wall insulation inside, and an exterior barrier.
This can create a sauna effect inside your wall, leading to possible mold and rot. Run squiggly beads of adhesive vertically across the interior of the wall, between the outlined edges, every 12 to 24 inches.
Be generous with the adhesive without being excessive; the adhesive merely holds the barrier in place until the furring strips are installed.
Stretch the barrier, if used, across the wall, allowing the excess to extend in each direction. Smooth and press into place carefully to secure. Use one unbroken sheet without holes and punctures, if possible. Overlap seams by several feet and tape along the length with duct tape when necessary.
Cover holes and tears with additional tape. This prevents leaks that defeat the purpose of a barrier. Check for level, holding the level underneath the bottom edge. Adjust as needed before securing. Use a masonry drill and masonry screws for masonry walls and nails for wood-framed walls. Space anchors about 8 to 10 inches apart. While these horizontal strips are not strictly necessary, they provide extra support around the drywall edges.
